- Saint Nicholas of Myra
Nicholas was the Bishop of Myra, in Asia Minor during the fourth century. The story is he became known for his generosity after inheriting money from his parents and deciding to use it to help others.
A now centuries-old story tells how Nicholas helped a poor man, who could not raise a dowry for his three daughters to be married, by throwing a bag of gold through an open window one night. This money provided a dowry for the eldest daughter to be married and Nicholas did the same for the next two daughters.
Over the centuries, the story of Nicholas' generosity spread throughout Europe, including in Holland where a tradition formed to give small gifts on St Nicholas’ Eve, December 5th.
The importance of St Nicholas for our Christmas Celebrations is a reminder that we should keep in mind those who are less fortunate than ourselves and do something practical for them!
It's about bringing a little extra Goodness to our world.
