- Corrie Ten Boom
Corrie ten Boom's family were dedicated Christians who were well respected in the community for their work with children and young people with disabilities. At the start of World War 2, when the German army invaded Holland, the family became involved in the resistance movement. Her father, Casper ten Boom, welcomed anyone in need into their home to escape the Nazis. He built a secret room in their house as a hiding place however they were eventually betrayed, arrested and imprisoned by the Nazis.
Corrie and Betsie were taken to the Ravensbruk Concentration camp in Germany. Her sister Betsie died from the mistreatment she received at the hands of the guards.
Corrie’s story is told in the book The Hiding Place. It is a story that tells how she found and shared hope in God in the middle of a terrible situation. She learned, in her own words, "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God." She discovered that she was able to celebrate Christmas in the midst of the horrors of the camp because she discovered that those horrors could not overcome the Christmas message!
